题目Title:

New light on reading: what studies of readers of Asian writing systems can tell us about the reading process in general

摘要Abstract:

Much of our understanding of the reading process has been built upon the study of readers of Roman-‐derived writing systems. The theoretical and computational models constructed to explain data from these studies come with several implicit assumptions: that the writing system is alphabetic, that words are delineated by spaces and thus represent clear targets for eye movements. However, reading is successfully achieved in much more varied input contexts. In the case of the Thai writing system, for example, the reader must deal with an alphabet of almost 70 characters and, significantly, cannot avail of spacing to separate words. Similarly, Chinese is unspaced and comprises several thousand distinct characters. If we are to build models of reading that can account for reading behaviour in a range of reading scenarios, we must be able to explain how readers extract words efficiently from the visual input in these varying contexts. This talk will describe eye movement studies of a number of Asian writing systems and show how they deepen our understanding of the early stages of the reading process.

简介Biography:

Ronan Reilly is Professor of Computer Science and Dean for International and Graduate Studies at National University of Ireland, Maynooth. He has a background in psychology and computer science. His research career has involved the application of computer modelling to various aspects of language understanding and reading. Most of his work has focussed on understanding the reading process, starting at the level of eye movement control. A particular concern of his research has been to develop models that can account for the eye movement behaviour of readers across a range of writing systems, from the Roman-based writing system of English through to Thaiand Chinese.

During his career he has been visiting professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies, the University of Potsdam, and at the MARCS Institute, University of Western Sydney.

另外,爱尔兰国立大学梅努斯暑期夏令营正在招募中,有兴趣的同学可现场向 Ronan Reilly教授咨询相关信息。
